Flashback Photo - Mork

This episode of Mork & Mindy aired in November 1979 in which Mork tried out for and made the Pony Express (Denver Broncos Cheerleaders).

Synopsis: While dejected Mork is confessing to Mindy that he has lost another job, eighty Pony Express cheerleaders drop in at Remo's deli. Impressed that the girls are paid to cheer up people, Mork asks for a job and they suggest that he apply at the Broncos' headquarters. A couple of the cheerleaders even coach him in their routines.

Upon returning from Denver, Mork reports that his application was filed in a wastebasket. Mindy's cousin, Nelson, takes up this case of sex discrimination as his election campaign platform, beginning by getting himself and Mork interviewed on television. Mork creates a high-altitude uproar when he joins the stunning women of the Denver Broncos' Pony Express as pro football's first male cheerleader and prances before 70,000 cheering fans in Denver's Mile High Stadium.

Halloween Memories

Fall is always a fun time of year. The leaves are changing color and the air is crisp outside. It’s the perfect time to gather around with family for spiced cider and pumpkin pie. And of course to watch football AND the World Series!!

I also love fall because of Halloween. I have so many wonderful memories of trick-or-treating with my little sister in the streets near my house. When I was about 8 years old, I was a bit of a goofy kid. My hair was always a mess and I had dirt stains on my clothes from playing outside all the time. While most girls were playing with Barbies, I was climbing trees outdoors and coming up with imaginary games which involved saving the world. Halloween, though, was time to play dress up and a time to transform into something beautiful. One of my favorite Halloween costumes was when I was a mermaid. I wore a long blond wig with flowing hair and put on red lipstick for the first time. I wore a shimmery outfit with green sequins for the scales, and clear high heels for my feet. I enjoyed going around to the neighbors and collecting as much candy as possible!!

Everyone has their own unique memories from Halloween. I asked a couple of the other Broncos Cheerleaders to tell me about their special Halloween memory. Here’s what they said:

“My favorite thing about Halloween has always been my family’s tradition to feast on my mom’s homemade chili and hot cider after a chilly evening of trick-or-treating. Today, the members of my family live in different cities but we keep the tradition alive by each making our own version of mom’s chili on Halloween night. My husband and I have started our own annual tradition of sharing my family’s special Halloween chili with a great group of friends while passing out candy to trick-or-treaters.” — Shelby Britton

“Last year I was searching for a silly costume that no one else would duplicate. So I went to a vintage shop up in Boulder and found the perfect prom dress from the ’80s. I accompanied it with a tiara, some leggings, and high top shoes and the perfect ’80s prom queen outfit was born!! I’ve always loved dressing up for halloween! I’ve been everything from a big pumpkin to a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle to the Joker from the Batman movies!” — Romi Bean

“When I was little I used to love skunks. I didn’t understand the whole concept of growing up, and when I was little I would tell my parents that I wanted to be a skunk when I was older. When Halloween rolled around, a skunk was the number one choice for me! I wore a little black outfit with a hood, tail, and that long white stripe from top to bottom. But, I also couldn’t pronounce the word correctly at that age, so I kept telling everyone that I was a ’stunk’ instead of a ’skunk’!” — Katie Layman

“My favorite memories from Halloween are from when I was younger. My mom, sister and I always dressed up, took pictures, and went trick-or-treating for the evening. It was also fun to hand out candy to the trick-or-treaters who came to our door. It was such an exciting time of year! It was so special to always be able to celebrate this holiday together, and even today I look back warmly on these fond memories!” — Jamie Dukehart-Conti

“The church I grew up in would always host an alternative Halloween celebration for kids in the community. The carnival-like atmosphere included lots of games, booths, and food. In high school, I volunteered to work at game booths a couple of times. It was so much fun - all of the little kids were dressed up in the cutest costumes (no scary costumes were allowed.) I would always use my dance outfits as last-minute costumes. One year I wore a tutu and my pointe shoes and kids and their parents alike would be amazed that I could stand on my tip-toes!” — Valerie Scott

Wild Bunch Revived - NLL, PLPA REACH SEVEN-YEAR DEAL

New 2008 schedule expected to be released next week

The NLL and the players' association agreed to a long-term Collective Bargaining Agreement, which begins in 2008 and runs through the 2014 season.The National Lacrosse League has announced the reaching of a new Collective Bargaining Agreement with the Professional Lacrosse Player's Association. The agreement is a seven-year term that begins in 2008 and run through the 2014 season. The agreement marks the longest labor deal in the 22-year history of professional indoor lacrosse. The league's previous three-year agreement with the PLPA expired following the 2007 season.

"Reaching a long-term collective bargaining agreement with the players was our number one priority in this process", said NLL Commissioner Jim Jennings. "We've been building positive growth in the league over the past few years. Securing long-term labor peace puts us in a position to take our league to the next level."

The agreement also means that professional indoor lacrosse will be played in 2008. When a new CBA had not reached by the league's deadline last week, the 2008 season was canceled. A new schedule for the 2008 National Lacrosse League season is expected to be announced next week.

With Sarah Schachterle's retirement from the Wild Bunch's Director position, several year member Stacia Boley will be preparing the dancers for the 2008 season.

Midwest Spirit Battle at the Capital This Weekend

The Denver Coliseum will host Midwest Spirit's Battle at the Capital Cheerleading and Dance Competition this Saturday, October 27th, starting at 10:30 am.



The Belles Performance Team will be assisting with the production of this event and will also provide the finale entertainment and host the trophy ceremonies. It's starting to get cold outside, so warm up this Saturday with some spirit and excitement at the Denver Coliseum!

The Belles Performance Team returned from attending the Ft. Worth Alliance Air Show this past weeked with excitement and fond memories. Over 200,000 aviation enthusiasts attended the show and many stopped to see the BPT perform dance routines that spanned in music from the 1960's to today.

The BPT were a special hit at Saturday nights VIP Ramp party, where they performed for many of the military personnel that were performing and exhibiting at the show. Pilots from the Navy Blue Angels and the Army Sky Soldiers were in attendance. This was truly the Top Gun of today's military pilots. Each branch of the armed forces gave the BPT members pins, stickers and patches, trying to brand them as their own.

"It was a small USO style performance," states Cher Fox, BPT Owner and Executive Director, "but the personnel kept yelling for encore after encore! It was really a unique and exciting opportunity for the BPT, one I will never forget!"

Sunday, the BPT spent the day with the crew of the hybrid helicopter/plane, the Osprey, featured in last week's smash DVD release The Transformers. They assisted the crew with merchandise sales, performed for the hundreds of people standing in line to tour the unique aircraft, took pictures on and around the aircraft and shot a high definition video of the BPT performing in front of the Osprey. What a day!

Monday morning, Southwest Academy welcomed the BPT to talk about the organization and perform for the students. Although most of the students were strict Dallas Cowboys fans, they engaged in Q & A with the Belles on topics such as dancer biographies and the planes featured on the BPT's 2007 aviation themed poster. After 2 performances which left one student speechless and "without comment it was so good", the BPT autographed the posters and wished the students well with the rest of their school day.

"This trip was especially close to my heart," comments Cher. "My parents, Joe and Cae Sullivan, hosted the team for the weekend and my nephew attends Southwest Academy, so it was an honor to share my passion and love of dance with him and his fellow students. He was so proud to have us there, he could barely find the courage and words to introduce us! That is him in the front row on the right proudly displaying our poster. Thanks Mom and Dad for the slumber party!"

Roller Derby acquires a Dance Team

After one very well received exhibition by the Belles Performance Team at the Rocky Mountain Rollergirls roller derby bout in September, the RMRG offered the BPT a contract to be their offical dancers for the rest of the 2007 roller derby season. After the BPT's first appearance as the official dancers of the RMRG October 6th, the RMRG and BPT decided this exciting partnership of beautiful and talented women dancers supporting the most beautiful and talented roller derby ladies was a match made in heaven. The organizations are currently negotiationg an exclusive 2008 contract.



"We all love having the Belles perform and it seems like the fans LOVE it too," shares RMRG Bout Production Director Madam MaimYa. "We enjoy creating and supporting female empowered business like the Belles and would love to further the relationship."

They made a great showing with glowing skin and toned bodies. The Belles also entertained the crowd during the pageant's costume changes and judges' deliberations.

Tans Competition

Five salons brought their best tans to DC10 for the ultimate bragging rights of Denver's Best Tan as judged by the Olly Girls from the hit E! reality show Sunset Tan. Planet Beach Contempo Spas, Executive Tans, Exclusive Tans, Zolarium, and Cherry Creek Tans participated with 3 - 5 representatives from each salon. Dancers from the Belles Performance Team and the Colorado Crossover were there supporting their sponsors. Although Planet Beach was not crowned the final winner, here are some pictures of the BPT showing off their healthy bronzed skin!

Little Bit O' Everything

As I sit down to write my blog this week I can’t help but reflect on how quickly time passes. Although the Broncos season has just kicked off, it is midway for the Denver Broncos Cheerleaders as we have been up and running since March! I have a hard time believing that this is my fourth season with the Broncos, and when I walked away from the stadium Sunday night, the stadium lights shut off, tailgating parties at a close, and the Broncos community celebrating a win, I was left in awe.

It never gets old to dance from the top of my head to the bottom of my feet in front of 76,000 fans. It really is hard to put words to the energy in my heart when I step out onto the field on game day. I saw a lot of Terrible Towels in the crowd on Sunday, but I saw and heard far more Broncos cheers and colors–and it resonates in my heart that I am in a beautiful place right now, and I feel completely blessed to be a part of this organization. There was a point in the game where I looked up in the sky–pitch black, little flurries of snow began to fall and every face in the crowd lunged forward with pure anticipation. There were 11 seconds on the clock in the fourth quarter, and moments later, Jason Elam came through yet again for the Broncos to pull out the win.

It is funny–as I watch the Rockies head to the World Series (a team with such popularity that ticket purchasing was suspended for the afternoon), and the Broncos put another win in the bag for the season, one of the things that stands out most to me is that none of these games would be as exciting if there weren’t fans. The Broncos are fans of the Rockies and vise versa, the Denver community has fans of every nature, and it really is what makes the seasons go ’round!

So for the sports fans out there who cheer from home or in the stadium, I would like to say, thank you for creating the experience of a lifetime for myself and so many others in the sports community!

So now I have a question for all of you, on a much lighter note. One of my favorite holidays is just around the bend – Halloween. Now, I enjoy Halloween because you can dress up as any character in the book for one night, plus I definitely have a sweet tooth. Now, trust me, I have had some pretty serious costumes in my day, but I have pretty much done everything in the book at this point. I think my favorite Halloween costume was a full-blown lion costume that my grandmother sewed for me (mane and all) when I was about 3! So I guess it’s been a while since I have had a good costume, which is why I need your help!

I know you all have some great ideas because I saw them at our DBC Halloween party in 2004. If you have creative or unique ideas or suggestions for a Halloween costume this year, I would appreciate the feedback. I do need to preface this by sharing just a few of the things I do not consider to be a costume:

* Ears and a tail
* Anything without face paint
* Just about any of the pre-packaged costumes; I want something original!

So please post your appropriate suggestions and we’ll see who comes up with the best costume idea. If you don’t have any suggestions but would like to post interesting (clean fun) costumes you have seen in the past, then please do; I always enjoy a good story. I look forward to your feedback.

As we prepare for our Monday night game against Green Bay, our entire team is unbelievably excited. There is nothing like Monday Night Football! There is a lot of history with Green Bay, especially some pretty fond memories of Super Bowl XXXII!

This is a big game, and we are all going to need to remind the Broncos why home-field advantage in Denver is just that. I was very impressed with the fans last week — the stadium was louder than ever and people were on their feet for the entire game. Let’s bring that out Monday night. See you on the field!

Colorado Crossover Leaves the International Basketball League

Another loss to the Colorado dance community, the International Basketball League's Colorado Crossover will not remain in the League for 2008. Although no official statement has been released by the team's owner Crossover Ministries, the Colorado team has been removed from the IBL's website list of teams and the Ministries website uses past tense verbiage to discuss the team.

"The Crossover Ministries had a professional IBL (International Basketball League) team, Colorado Crossover, that played in the 2006 & 2007 seasons."

We will miss this amazing opportunity lead by Terita Walker, Denver Broncos Cheerleader, former Denver Nuggets, Chicago Luvabulls, and Chicago Rush Adrenaline Dancer. We wish their dancers the best in finding new teams to display their talent!

You may remember the Aurora Cavalry from the 2006 IBL season. They folded after 1 year in the league. A couple of their dancers found homes on the Colorado 14ers and the CU Gold Rush. Visit the Cavalry Girls' myspace here.

Where Are They Now? Lindsey Kovacevich

A KPIC anchor is putting her past talent to work by helping out a local cheerleading squad.

Lindsey Kovacevich has cheered for four years on professional dance teams, including the Colorado Eagles and the Denver Nuggets. She now helps the Roseburg High School cheerleading team prepare for cheer competitions.



RHS cheer coach Alesha Hunt says cheerleading competitions are a priority for this year's squad, and they will compete in at least four competitions. She says the girls appreciate Lindsey visiting, but she gives them quite a workout.

"She's definitely stricter, harder on them which is definitely what I lacked and what they needed. They absolutely just love her, and her skill level is professional, so that's always an added bonus to have her around."



Hunt combines her past entertaining talent with Lindsey's dance experience. Hunt cheered all four years at Sutherlin High School, including at the 1996 state championship basketball game in Portland.

The Roseburg Cheer Squad will put their spirit to the test and compete in the state competition in February.

Sarah Schachterle has retired from the Kroenke Sports family after 8 years of Directing the Denver Nuggets Dancers and 5 Years Directing the Wild Bunch Dancers. Her edgy style and amazing choreography will be missed on the NBA and NLL entertainment floors.

Since the NLL canceled the 2008 season, now is a great time to get into this position and learn the ropes only managing one dance team.

Players' Association rejects league proposal

The 2008 NLL season was cancelled on Tuesday after the players' association rejected the league's final offer.The National Lacrosse League has announced the cancellation of its 2008 season. The cancellation was triggered by the Professional Lacrosse Players Association's executive committee rejecting the league's last Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) proposal.

"I would like to apologize to our fans, first and foremost", said NLL Commissioner Jim Jennings. "We are deeply disappointed that the PLPA's executive committee rejected our proposal without permitting all of the players to vote on the league's final offer. The offer included annual raises for all players in each year of the contract. Our owners made the best offer they could make while maintaining a sound business model".

Jennings continued, "This marked the fourth time we have had to negotiate a collective bargaining agreement in the past seven years. Professional sports leagues cannot do business without the stability of a long-term collective bargaining agreement. We will use this year to improve not only our relationship with our players but to improve our overall business model."

Rebuilding in New Orleans

Hi everyone, this is Melissa Aust and this past weekend I took a very special trip. My good friend Keela asked if I would share my experience with you, so here I am.

Have you ever sat down to write something and wanted it to be really meaningful? Maybe it was a toast at a wedding, a speech to your fellow classmates or a eulogy at a funeral. Whatever it was, you probably sat there thinking about exactly what you wanted to say and how it would sound.

Well, I sit here typing this in that state. I hope that I can say something meaningful about this trip, and I hope I can provide you with something to remember.

You’re probably thinking, “So what’s this story?!”

So here I go…

On Aug. 29, 2005, the most devastating storm modern America has seen hit New Orleans, La.: Hurricane Katrina. On Sept. 26 of this year I made my first trip out there. Two years and 28 days after Katrina hit. No one mentions New Orleans on the news anymore and relief efforts seem to have died down. We live in the wealthiest nation in the world so all of this combined must mean that New Orleans is totally rebuilt, right?

Wrong. So wrong.

Five fellow (and amazingly fun) members of my church and myself landed at the Louis Armstrong Airport on Wednesday night. Since we had landed pretty late, it was difficult to see what was beyond the roads we drove on. The next day we would take that same drive but I would see it in a completely different way. Our first night we went to the famed Cafe Du Monde in the French Quarter. Nothing like a midnight beignet along the Mississippi River!

The next day we woke up bright and early and headed to a woman named Yvette’s house. As we drove along the road to her house I couldn’t believe what I saw. I had seen pictures of Katrina, watched documentaries, followed it on the news. I have to say it’s very surreal seeing all of it in person. You wouldn’t believe some of the devastation around the entire city. Mind you I’m saying this two years after the storm. When we arrived at Yvette’s home in Gentilly I was shocked to learn that almost her entire street still wasn’t moved back into their homes. Some of them couldn’t move back because of the sheer cost and others because of extenuating circumstances. For example, Yvette’s neighbors the Princes were an elderly couple. The husband had been ill before the storm and just after his wife was diagnosed with cancer. They weren’t a very wealthy couple to begin with so now moving in which seemed difficult before because of their income and old age became impossible.

Her neighborhood had FEMA trailers parked outside of most of the homes. We were able to go inside Yvette’s trailer. For one person it’s tight living space. Now imagine families of 4 and 5 living in them, with growing active kids. It’s hard to believe that an entire population of people have been surviving like this. Our group spent most of our trip working on Yvette’s home with her. I got to use power tools for the first time which was fun. On Friday our host took us on a tour around the entire city. We went to the east which was the very first part of the city to flood. We saw them tearing down several huge apartment buildings as we drove by. Again — two years later. We drove through Musicians Village which Habitat for Humanity has done an amazing job with. Our next stop was the ninth ward.

As we drove over the bridge we started to come towards a large field. Not until we got closer and our host told us did I realize that this was the lower 9th ward. Not an empty field, but the former place of people’s homes and livelihoods. As we drove up and down the streets we passed foundation after foundation. There were cement steps leading up to the front porches of a lot of the homes. What was crazy was that there were no homes once you walked up the steps. Probably over 90% of the houses had literally been picked up and swept away when the canal behind the community broke. There were a few FEMA trailers sprinkled around the area but not too many. It had taken so long for them to get water and power going for the trailers that most people had found alternative places to live. In fact a lot of people that were displaced are now living here in Denver. If you are reading this and you are one of those people, I am truly sorry for your loss and I am also so impressed that you have been able to start your life outside of the city you love.

I think there is an incredible lesson to be learned from those that survived Hurricane Katrina. I don’t think we should feel pity for them but instead we should step back and take a lesson from the way they have carried themselves. In the most adverse of times they survived. They were strong, they are strong. It takes a lot to start over; courage, strength, hope, faith, love, determination and so much more that is not tangible or describable.

Being in New Orleans didn’t make me sad; well, it did sadden me at many times, but instead it inspired me. The city’s ability to rebuild and revive is inspiring. New Orleans gave me so much more than I gave them. They gave me an appreciation for the blessings in my life that I might not have experienced otherwise. They taught me that there is nothing you can’t overcome. They showed me hope as I had never seen it before. What will I do to give back to the community that gave me so much? I actually do have a dream, a plan that I hope can come to fruition.

I would like to build a green space or a playground for the children of New Orleans. For the kids that are so affected by the PTSD from the storm. For the ones that are cooped up in their FEMA trailers with 6 other people. For the future that will be leading such a great city. It will take a lot of effort and time and resource and I’m not sure how I will pull it together but I know that if I really want to do this I can. It may take a year, maybe two, but all of that time and effort will be worth helping the generations of kids that will be able to benefit from something like that. There was not a single playground or greenspace in the entire city that I could find or see. Most of them are now FEMA trailer parks. So we will see where this dream heads.

In the mean time I hope that you keep New Orleans in your thoughts and if you pray, in your prayers. They still need people to come down and help rebuild. They still need people donating towards relief efforts. Hurricane Katrina may be over, but the effects of it will be around for a long time.

Those that have been to New Orleans since Katrina know that what I have written doesn’t even begin to fully encompass what it’s like down there. But I hope that it gives an insight to those that haven’t. Well Broncos fans, thanks for letting me share my story with you.

Denver Broncos Alumni Weekend

All of the current cheerleaders love hearing from the alumni and last week was a big treat for us. I am in my second season as a Denver Broncos Cheerleader, so I have not danced with many of the alumni in the past. Last week I was able to meet so many more of the girls and it was wonderful. It was great to hear stories from the girls on the 1993 team and to see what it was like when the team first began. I also spoke to several alumni who were cheerleaders on the Super Bowl team, and they have incredible stories about that experience. We looked though old photo albums and it was neat to see how the team has evolved. It is easy to see that the alumni have fond memories of being on this team as their eyes light up when they tell their stories.

I would say that my favorite part was watching those girls dance on the field at halftime. None of us take being on this team for granted. It is something that we all worked very hard for and we cherish every moment. The alumni did not taking performing on Sunday for granted either and they worked hard to put on a great show. Over 100 of the alumni cheerleaders participated in the halftime show and we formed a big kickline at the end of the dance. It was particularly fun to watch our current coaches Teresa Shear and Shelly Trujillo perform — they did a great job!

Last Sunday was also special for us because of the Susan G. Komen Foundation. The Denver Broncos Cheerleaders had a large team for the Race for the Cure. The money raised at the race combined with other fundraising activities resulted in $40,000 to give to the Foundation in Lisa Pevateaux’s name. Lisa is one of our alumni cheerleaders and she is amazing. I met her for the first time last weekend and she has such a warm spirit. It is amazing what a group of motivated people can accomplish and I am proud of the team’s accomplishment.

Answers to Your Questions

Thank you for your questions and comments. Read below for my answers…

1. What inspired you to come out from Ontario to go to school in Boulder?

I was born in Toronto but moved when I was very young to the United States. My extended family still lives up there and I love to visit. My mom, dad, sister and I returned to Toronto a few months ago to spend time at the cottage and see all of our family. After Toronto, we moved to Minnesota, North Carolina, Texas and then settled in Denver. I absolutely love it here. I have lived in Denver for almost 8 years and chose to remain in Colorado for college. I attended the University of Colorado at Boulder.

2. What is better? Fall in the Rockies or fall in the NE/lakes?!

Sadly, I can’t answer this one because it’s been a while since I have seen fall in the NE/lakes area. My family tends to visit Ontario in the summer time. But I love fall here in Colorado. I just got back from trail running and it was awesome. The leaves are starting to change color, it’s not too hot, and not too cold. I am planning to get up to the mountains this weekend to enjoy the change of seasons.

3. How long it takes the squad to get ready for game day in regards to makeup, and what the routine is (favorite makeup brands? etc?) the makeup everyone wears really compliments your features but comes off very natural and not overdone. Do you girls do it yourself or does someone come in and do it for you?

Good question. Thank you for the compliment in regards to our makeup. The majority of the girls do not put on a lot of makeup on a daily basis, but we put on a lot more for the games to stand out on the field. On game days we get to the stadium several hours before the game starts. We have a field rehearsal for about an hour and then about 2 hours to eat and do hair and makeup. This time is fun for us as we put on music and talk to each other.

We have a variety of makeup artists who come during the games, but there is not enough time for everyone to get their makeup done. Some girls on the team prefer to do their own makeup to save time. I love it when I get my makeup done before games, but I’d say that happens only a few times during the season. But, I’ve picked up some tricks from the stylists — they have all been very helpful. In regards to hair, Antoine Du Chez is our sponsor and all of their stylists are wonderful.

As for makeup brands, it definitely varies. I really like MAC makeup, but we all use a variety. Don’t underestimate what you can find at Walgreens!

4. Do you know how many of the cheerleaders will be at the Barn before Sunday’s game - and also before the October 7th game with San Diego? Will they be selling calendars there? The two we got autographed at the release party are already committed as Christmas gifts, so I need to get one I can keep.

Typically four cheerleaders go to the Broncos Barn before the games and it’s different girls each week. They sign autographs and perform a couple of dance numbers. If you would like another signed calendar, I would recommend purchasing one online or from the Broncos store and tracking us down before or after the game. A fully signed calendar is also available online as well.

5. How frustrating is it to have your back turned to the field and all the action for the entire game? Especially as a Bronco fan that has be tough, but by the reaction of the crowd I am sure you know whether the play was successful or not. I would just think at times it would be a little frustrating, but i am sure you’re having fun so hopefully it’s worth it.

We are almost always facing the field during the play and we face the fans during timeouts, breaks or right before the ball is in movement. But we love cheering and dancing to get the fans excited about the game. I do get to see the majority of the game, although there are times when cameramen get in the way. I try to always have an eye on one of the jumbotrons so I know what is going on in the game. And yes, we are definitely having fun out there!
