Workout Humor as Audition Season Rolls Around

A Woman's Week At The Gym

Dear Diary,
For my birthday this year, my daughter (the sweetest girl) purchased a week of
personal training at the local health club for me. Although I am still in great shape since being a high school football cheerleader 43 years ago, I decided it would be a good idea to go ahead and give it a try.

I called the club and made my reservations with a personal trainer named Belinda, who identified herself as a 26-year-old aerobics instructor and model for athletic clothing and swim wear.

My daughter seemed pleased with my enthusiasm to get started! The club encouraged me to keep a diary to chart my progress.

MONDAY:
Started my day at 6:00 a.m. Tough to get out of bed, but found it was well worth it when I arrived at the health club to find Belinda waiting for me. She is something of a Greek goddess -- with blonde hair, dancing eyes and a dazzling white smile. Woo Hoo!! Belinda gave me a tour and showed me the machines. I enjoyed watching the skillful way in which she conducted her aerobics class after my workout today. Very inspiring! Belinda was encouraging as I did my sit-ups, although my gut was already aching from holding it in the whole time she was around. This is going to be a FANTASTIC week!

TUESDAY:
I drank a whole pot of coffee, but I finally made it out the door. Belinda made me lie on my back and push a heavy iron bar into the air then she put weights on it! My legs were a little wobbly on the treadmill, but I made the full mile. Belinda's rewarding smile made it all worthwhile. I feel GREAT! It's a whole new life for me.

WEDNESDAY :
The only way I can brush my teeth is by laying the toothbrush on the counter and moving my mouth back and forth over it. I believe I have a hernia in both pectorals. Driving was OK as long as I didn't try to steer or stop. I parked on top of a GEO in the club parking lot.

Belinda was impatient with me, insisting that my screams bothered other club members. Her voice is a little too perky for early in the morning and when she scolds, she gets this nasally whine that is VERY annoying. My chest hurt when I got on the treadmill, so Belinda put me on the stair monster. Why would anyone invent a machine to simulate an activity rendered obsolete by elevators? Belinda told me it would help me get in shape and enjoy life. She said some other stuff too.

THURSDAY:
Belinda was waiting for me with her vampire-like teeth exposed as her thin, cruel lips were pulled back in a full snarl. I couldn't help being a half an hour late, it took me that long to tie my shoes.

Belinda took me to work out with dumbbells. When she was not looking, I ran and hid in the restroom. She sent another skinny trainer to find me.

Then, as punishment, she put me on the rowing machine -- which I sank.

FRIDAY:
I hate that Belinda more than any human being has ever hated any other human being in the history of the world. Stupid, skinny, anemic, anorexic little cheerleader. If there was a part of my body I could move without unbearable pain, I would beat her with it.

Belinda wanted me to work on my triceps. I don't have any triceps! And if you don't want dents in the floor, don't hand me the darn barbells or anything that weighs more than a sandwich. The treadmill flung me off and I landed on a health and nutrition teacher.

Why couldn't it have been someone softer, like the drama coach or the choir director?

SATURDAY:
Belinda left a message on my answering machine in her grating, shrilly voice wondering why I did not show up today. Just hearing her made me want to smash the machine with my planner. However, I lacked the strength to even use the TV remote and ended up catching eleven straight hours of the Weather Channel.

SUNDAY:
I'm having the Church van pick me up for services today so I can go and thank GOD that this week is over. I will also pray that next year my daughter (the little brat) will choose a gift for me that is fun -- like a root canal or a hysterectomy.

I still say if God had wanted me to bend over, he would have sprinkled
the floor with diamonds.

Profanity was omitted or edited and may have removed a smidge of the humor!

Good day, everyone!

All of the below are just a few images of our Armed Forces Entertainment tour. A combination of photos from the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial in Pearl Harbor, a traditional sushi dinner in Okinawa, Anderson Air Force Base, our sky-diving adventure and a few more.

As I have shared, this tour was incredible, our troops are phenomenal heroes and for their dedicated service we are forever indebted.

God Bless!

Blast from the Past Photos - Denver Nuggets Auditions 2007

On 07-14-2007, the Denver Nuggets Dancers held their preliminary auditions. Bobby from Bobby’s Sports Photography was there to cover day one on behalf of We Cover Sports Magazine. You can see some of the exciting photos that Bobby took as the girls were competing for a chance to become a Denver Nuggets Dancer.

Day one consisted of 224 girls trying out for one of 18 spots. When I arrived at the Pepsi Center there were girls already lining up around the building. I first met up with Kristin Engler, a former Denver Nugget Dancer and judge, walked me in to the Pepsi Center past the frenzy of audition hopefuls. She introduced me to Sarah Schachterle, the Director and Choreographer, for this phenomenal dance team. Sarah went the extra mile all day to make sure the dancers were learning in a fun and energetic environment. Even though she must have been stressed with all of the hard work behind executing an audition, Sarah didn’t let it show at all.

Around noon, Sarah, along with some demo girls, taught an “across the floor” combination that consisted of basic kicks, leaps, turns and a little style. After some practicing, the judges were brought in and introduced to the girls. Sarah had selected a panel of judges that represented a large array of professions. She had everyone from a major sports magazine editor to Justin Timberlake’s assistant choreographer.

The girls lined up in order and danced in groups of two to show the judges their moves. It was interesting to see what girls had it and which didn’t. I could tell almost immediately who had been on the team previously and who was lacking in dance training. After all 224 girls danced, the judges left the court to deliberate cutting approximately fifty percent of the candidates to move on to the next round.

The next phase involved learning a full routine. Sarah and the demo girls taught the routine in about an hour (which I’m told is fairly quick for a one minute routine). After rehearsing the combination a few times through, the girls were now ready to showcase the routine to the judges one last time before being selected for day two. The judges narrowed down the next round to about 60 women.

The remainder of the audition consisted of the ‘day two, boot-camp’, an interview and a night designated for the final audition. About forty women were invited to finals. I briefly spoke with one of the judges from the final round stating that “this was one of the toughest decisions we’ve ever had to make because of the incredible talent level these ladies bring. Sarah is going to have a beautiful team”.

The judges and Sarah selected 18 beautiful and talented women to represent the Denver Nuggets for the 2007-2008 season.

Okinawa celebrates Super Bowl in big style

Lance Cpl. Daniel R. Todd
The Okinawa Marine

CAMP FOSTER, Okinawa (February 8, 2008) -- As Americans gathered all over the country for traditional Super Bowl Sunday celebrations this year, service members on Okinawa staged early morning Super Bowl Monday celebrations.

The game is one of the most celebrated American entertainment rituals of the year, attracting close to 100 million television viewers. It's so big that Marine commands on Okinawa took the day off to watch the game, which aired Monday morning at 8.

While some watched from home or joined friends for small parties, hundreds attended Super Bowl bashes at clubs on installations all over Okinawa.

One of the larger parties, hosted by Marine Corps Community Services at the Camp Foster Globe and Anchor, drew a crowd of about 350. An appearance by the Denver Broncos cheerleaders highlighted the party, and MCCS gave out prizes during the game to punctuate the celebration.

The Broncos cheerleaders made their appearance at the Globe and Anchor before the game kicked off and then traveled to parties at other base clubs. They made a surprise visit to Thirsty's on Marine Corps Air Station Futenma, performed at the Butler Officers Club on Camp Foster during halftime and finished their tour at the Palms on Camp Hansen.

"It couldn't have been better," said Javier Dominguez, a Giants fan who attended the Globe and Anchor party. "I had hot cheerleaders to look at, a chance to win prizes, and I had the day off just so I could watch the Super Bowl. What more could I ask for? It was an awesome party, and my team won."

The large crowd at the Globe was filled with fans from both teams, and throughout the game, they traded shots.

"Talking smack makes it more interesting and fun," Dominguez said. "There is nothing personal about it really. It's just part of being a fan and supporting your team."

The Globe and Anchor grew deafeningly loud when a team scored, and as the game stayed tight, fans stayed on the edge of their seats until the end.

The crowd erupted when Giants quarterback Eli Manning completed a 13-yard touchdown pass to receiver Plaxico Burress to regain the lead in the last 35 seconds.

Giants fans went wild, giving each other high fives and yelling "Hell yeah! I knew they could do it." Patriots fan hung their heads and cursed in disgust, but some still believed in their team and shouted "They can still do it; there is still time left."

The entire crowd stood for the last Patriots drive, growing louder and louder as the clock ran down and the Giants drew closer to becoming Super Bowl champions. Patriots fans cringed, and Giants fans cheered with every unsuccessful Patriots attempt. When the Patriots finally failed on their last drive, the Giants fans wouldn't stop cheering and laughing.

"I couldn't stop grinning and laughing because who would've expected a wild card team to beat an undefeated team?" said Thomas Lew, a Brooklyn, N.Y. native and Giants fan. "It was awesome. I have been telling people all year that the Giants were a good team. I never lost faith, and now it is great to be able to say 'I told you so.'"

Konnichiwa!

I couldn’t tell you what time it is, what day it is, how many days we have left on tour or every event that has taken place in the last few weeks, but I can tell you that every moment has been rich!

We have currently set up camp in Okinawa at Kadena Air Base. We performed a show last night and will perform our last full show this evening at Camp Schwab. The majority of troops on this base are Marines.

Tomorrow we have a full day. We will rise at 6 a.m. to prepare for a Super Bowl halftime performance mid-morning during the Giants-Pats faceoff. We will be in attendance to surprise some troops at two different Super Bowl parties on base tomorrow. Those shows will be a 25-minute abbreviated version of our full 1 1/2 hour show.

I must say I would love it if the Broncos were in the Super Bowl, but we have been blessed; if the Broncos WERE in the Super Bowl, we would not have been able to attend this tour. Rather than performing on the championship field in Arizona, we will be rocking the orange and blue in a completely different fashion on a very different stage, located on a completely different side of the world, for some extraordinary individuals. ‘Super Bowl Monday’ in Japan will never be the same!

One of the things that always stands out to me on these tours is my appreciation for the families in the Armed Forces — the mothers, fathers, husbands, wives, grandparents, and children that support the troops representing their families for the United States of America. Joining the military is a community sacrifice within a family. Being away from my family for 3 weeks is difficult; being separated from your family for six-to-15 month increments is a sacrifice, a duty that is difficult to comprehend and a gift to all of us. I look forward to our next and last few days abroad thanking our troops and celebrating their devotion.

We will soon touch down in Denver again. Isn’t it interesting the impact and perspective that 21 days can have on a person, on a team? We have only been able to share a glimpse of our gratitude, but I look forward to coming home and sharing their stories for years to come.

Many blessings and sayonara.

Good Times in Guam

Good morning from Guam, Broncos Country!

I have a few minutes of downtime this afternoon, so I wanted to write a brief blog entry to keep you posted on our travels.

We arrived in Guam on Jan. 24 and it has been a beautiful time and a rich experience. Guam is incredibly westernized and the people, tropical nature, and tone have all been so warm and welcoming.

Yesterday was the busiest day we have had yet. We were able to spend time with the Navy and Air Force men and women. Along our visits we spent time with so many different professions — among some of the things on the agenda we saw a dog-handler demonstration, and learned a little more about the Air Force. We also toured a “Stealth” B2 bomber — an experience, we are told, that many in the military never have the opportunity to do.

We hosted a youth cheerleading clinic, performed our show, and that evening spent time with all of the men and women at a Karaoke bar on base, and sang our hearts out!! It was fun to see all of the soldiers let their guard down a little bit and enjoy good company and a lot of bad voices.

Spending time learing more about individual professions is an honor. The Air Force has one of the most thrilling playgrounds in the world, and one of the pilots said this to me, “I fly all day, I do what I love, and I will serve this country until the day I die.”

“Until the day I die” … That is a dedication that can not be put into words. That is a profession that is not designed for all, but because these individuals are offering their gifts to the world around them, we have freedom!

I will write more later. I hope all is well in Colorado.

Many Blessings!
Keela (1/29/2008)
