Ski Season has arrived!

For those of you who have never been World Cup ski racing event, I highly suggest you check one out in Colorado!! This last weekend was my first experience watching the spectacle even though I am a native, and it will definitely not be my last.

I headed up to Vail/Beaver Creek around noon on Saturday, and after making it through the complete white out over Vail pass, I coasted into the village and was ready for the excitement to ensue.

I don’t know much about ski racing but I do know about former US Ski Team member Bode Miller. That’s exactly who I was there to cheer on. Bode is a world re-noun racer who may be more recognizable for his exit from the US team only to venture out and form his own team, solo, on his own terms.

Bode was in CO for the Birds of Prey Downhill race, which is the marquee event for skiing in the Beaver Creek World Cup event. The specific event is one of the top 5 downhill courses in the world. It is a double black diamond run and is scary enough when you are skiing slowly, so you can just imagine it going 95 mph. Crazy!!! Last year Bode won it as a US Ski Team member, and this year as a member of his own team, “Team America” he took 6th.

Bode barely missed a podium place after the slalom portion of the super combined event, and had the 18th fastest time in the slalom. Next was competing in the Super G, the highlight, on Sunday. First he had to throw a party at Rocks in Beaver Creek along with one of his sponsors, Head skis.

I can attest that fans of skiing as well as most of the racers themselves know how to throw a good party! This year that did not include Mr. Miller who is making a strong effort to be on his best behavior. I on the other hand was not. Sunday was beautiful but brutal! J

Now that Bode is making a respectable name for himself again he is busy man. He is traveling to New York today to do some PR work as he continues the World Cup run, and is unavailable to pay a little visit on Mile High Sports Radio (he promises he will next time!!).

Tune in today to Drive Time Sports to listen to a former teammate of Bode’s chat about him, but also speak about his personal amazing comeback to the sport after a devastating accident. Dial into AM 1510 at 5pm for the “Who is in Renee’s Cell Phone” segment of the show.

Ciao and Cheers until next time!
