Miss Colorado Blogs

Hi Friends,

Exactly one month ago, I was in Las Vegas for the experience of a lifetime! I was competing for the crown of Miss America 2010, and it was the most amazing, life-changing, wonderful time of my life! I feel so blessed and am so grateful to have made it into the top 12! I hope I made Colorado proud!

I would like to thank the Miss Colorado Organization and Board of Directors, Wayne and Suzi Doland, Katee Mink, Christi Demetrion, Jamie Dukehart-Conti, and all of those who helped with my Miss America preparations and gave me guidance and support. I'd also like to thank my family, all my friends, and Janelle, Stacey, Melaina, Kayla, Caley and Morgan for cheering me on and making me feel so loved!

Every day I was in Las Vegas was memorable, exciting and so much fun! One of my favorite moments was the IHOP breakfast appearance. Flipping pancakes was quite an event, and I must say, I'm pretty good with a spatula! All of the contestants were able to meet some of the children who are part of Children's Miracle Network, and hearing their amazing survival stories was very humbling. It was really inspirational to learn about what they've fought through, and where they're at now in their lives.

I am excited to be back home in Colorado and I am now looking forward to my last 4 months serving as your Miss Colorado. I have had so many experiences that I will always cherish. One of my favorite appearances this year was the Veterans Luncheon at the Rocky Mountain Airspace Museum. At this event, I got to visit with Governor Bill Ritter, Gateway High School ROTC members and Veterans of Americas Armed Forces. While visiting with the veterans, I was truly touched to hear their stories of how they served our country and I felt very blessed to be one of their fellow Americans.

I will also be graduating this spring from the University of Colorado and I will be receiving my degree in Photography, with a minor in Psychology. The scholarship money I have earned through the Miss Colorado and Miss America Organizations have helped to pay for my education and will continue to help me as I pursue my Arts Education License to teach secondary education.

As my year is winding down, I'm excited for workshops to begin and to meet all the new contestants who will be competing for the job of Miss Colorado 2010!

All my best,

Katie Layman

Where are They Now - Briget Steckler

Briget grew up in the suburbs of Denver, Colorado. She trained at Starstruck Dance Academy for 18 years, specializing in jazz, ballet, lyrical and hip hop. She moved to Los Angeles after graduating high school and trained at Edge Performing Arts, in Hollywood, California. Briget then decided that she wanted to further her education, so she moved home to Denver and attended The University of Denver, graduating with her Bachelor of Science in Marketing and Finance.

With her passion for dance still burning inside she auditioned and went on to be a Denver Broncos Cheerleaders for the next six years, including two years as a team captain. A few of Briget’s most treasured experiences include performing at the American Bowl in Australia, the New Year’s Day celebration in Hong Kong, the Armed Forces Entertainment in Guantanamo Bay and being selected to represent the Denver Broncos at the Pro Bowl in Honolulu, Hawaii.

When Briget was introduced to the Pure Barre Technique, she knew that this was what she had always hoped for! Pure Barre was the perfect fix for her appetite of fitness and dancing! Briget feels so blessed to be part of such an amazing team of women and is thrilled at the opportunity to share the Pure Barre Technique and "experience" with other women!

What is the Pure Barre technique?

Pure Barre is a total body workout that lifts your seat, tones your thighs and burns fat in record-breaking time. Utilizing the ballet barre to perform small isometric movements set to fantastic music, Pure Barre is the fastest, most effective, yet safest way to change your body. Students see results in just 10 classes.

Pure Barre is intelligent exercise. The technique protects your joints as it does not involve any bouncing or jumping. Each strength section of the workout is followed by a stretching section in order to create long, lean muscle without bulk. The workout launches a full blown attack on the areas of the body all women struggle with: abs, hips, seat and arms. It defies gravity by tapering everything in and lifting it up.

The workout requires such focus that you block "life" out for the hour allowing you to obtain the mental benefits achieved in yoga or meditation. A transformed body and a clear head in just one hour- it doesn't get much better than this.

In the Heights - Connecting with Denver's Dance Scene

This weekend we will be at the Denver Dance Festival promoting In the Heights, which will play The Buell Theatre April 28-May 9. The Denver Dance Festival is a three-day dance festival held annually in Denver featuring live performances from some of Denver’s best dance talent. This is a wonderful opportunity for us to reach out to a community that may not know that not all musicals are jazz hands and kick lines.

In The Heights tells the story of a vibrant community in Manhattan’s Washington Heights – a place where the coffee from the corner bodega is light and sweet, the windows are always open, and the breeze carries the rhythm of three generations of music. It’s a community on the brink of change, full of hopes, dreams and pressures, where the biggest struggles can be deciding which traditions you take with you, and which ones you leave behind.

Propelled by the rhythms of hip hop and Latin music – uncommon sounds in musical theatre – In The Heights ’ invigorating beat belies a musical steeped in Broadway tradition. Plus it won four Tony Awards in 2008 for Best Musical, Best Score, Best Orchestration and, more importantly for this weekend, BEST CHOREOGRAPHY! Catch a glimpse of the dancing in this video of the song “96,000″:

We took some time to chat with Denver Dance Festival’s creators and directors Sarah Schachterle and Ken Jiminez about the Denver Dance Festival (DDF) and how it connects with In The Heights.

Denver Center: What made you start DDF?

Sarah & Ken: We wanted to display the talent of Colorado choreographers and dance companies and give them an avenue to unite with other artists and expose the greater community to the abundance of talent in the area. We wanted to gain recognition and popularity in dance within Colorado and to be known throughout the country as an up and coming prestigious dance festival offering a world-class dance experience. We wanted to include the most accomplished local and national dance talent in the festival, exposing the Colorado community to an even greater dimension of dance entertainment.

DC: Exposing them to a greater dimension of dance entertainment, that’s great and much like what we are trying to do with In The Heights! Tell us about some of the crews and companies performing.

S&K: We have everything from breakdancing to swingdancers. A couple of our groups were accepted on MTV’s hit show “America’s Best Dance Crew” and we have guest performers from New York City whose main performer and choreographer, “Stretch,” has choreographed for Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey, and won awards for his choreography for Will Smith. In addition to these acts there is Salsa dancing, jazz, contemporary, and more. There will definitely be something for everyone.

DC: Many people don’t know how rich with culture the dance scene is here in Colorado. What would you say to help educate folks about it?

S&K: We would say to look into it! There is more than meets the eye. These days there are countless ways to get information…take the time to look it up. You will be amazed at all the culture Denver has to offer – a hint – some of the most interesting things are somewhat “underground” and spend their time and energy on product not advertising or decorating, so you may need to do some digging!

2010 Wild Bunch perform "Livin in the Wild Wild West"

Performed on Wild West night February 27 2010. Choreographed by coach Amy Jo Wagner.

Eagle Chicks - The Best of the Best

LOVELAND, Colo. - The Central Hockey League released today, the results of their annual "Best of the Best" poll, voted on by those who know the industry...the best -- its own players, coaches and operational staffs. And for the third consecutive season, the Colorado Eagles garnered more honors than any other franchise on the way to setting a new organizational high for first-place winners.

The poll -- which has 46 different categories -- covers not only players, but arenas, fans, in-game entertainment and more. In the 2009-10 edition, the Eagles received a first, second, or third-place ranking in 24 of those categories (52 percent) -- by far the most of any other CHL organization.

The Eagles placed in 24 of the same 46 categories last season as well (a franchise high), but this season the team earned first-place votes in 15 of them, surpassing last year's 11 first-place winners (then, a team record).

The Eagles' franchise also received first place rankings in: "Best Training & Equipment Staff" (Tony Deynzer and Chris Porowski), "Toughest Building to Win in" (Budweiser Events Center) for the sixth year in a row, "Best Ice Surface" for the second year in a row, "Best PA Announcer" (Reed Saunders), "Best Press Box," "Best On-Ice Promotions" and "Best Cheerleaders/Dance Team" (The Pioneer Press Eagles Chicks) for the fourth year in a row.

Colorado's overall breakdown of honors includes 15 first-place rankings, eight second-place rankings and three third-place rankings. A full list of the results can be downloaded here.

Jamile McGee 'So You Think You Can Dance' teaching for Allana's Academy of Dance Littleton Colorado

Examiner.com
Lynda Ackert

Local dancers have been given an awesome opportunity to learn from Jamile McGee, an American Bboy and Hip Hop dancer. In February, Jamile began teaching classes at Allana's Academy of Dance in Littleton.

Why study under Jamile? Jamile started dancing at the age of 4 and gave his first professional performance at the age of 14. Now at the age of 25 Jamile has become a natural on stage wowing the crowds with his vibrant breaking, popping, locking, and Hip Hop. He had performed and danced around the USA and internationally since his debut on “So you think you can dance?” He is on tour as a dancer with Wayne Brady for the next year.

His ability to dance to any style was tested and proven on the highly rated national Fox TV show, "So You Think You Can Dance?" He amazed the crowd with his spirited come back every week with highly energized, outstanding freestyle solos.

Jamile was a dance major at Wright State University where he excelled in ballet, modern, and lyrical. He taught his first master class at age 16 at the Peabody Conservatory for Dance and has appeared in numerous music videos, including Nelly Furtado's "Maneater", Mariah Carey's "Pepsi Commercial", Chris Brown's "Gimme That", and Rihanna's "SOS."

Jamile has also overcome adversity in his life which has given him even more to share with his students. After being diagnosed with Systemic Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis, he was told he would either be in a wheel chair or not be able to walk for the remainder of his life. However, that was not to be. He was miraculously healed of this disease and loves to share his gifts with the next generation.

At Allana's Academy of Dance in Littleton, Jamile is now teaching classes on Sundays:

Children's Pop & Lock
Teen/Adult Pop & Lock
Teen/Adult Jazz/Funk
Adult Hip Hop

The studio is located at 3625 W. Bowles Ave #17 in Littleton by Skate City (Bowles and Lowell).
