Work That Body

The Broncos have opened cheerleader tryouts to the public — reality-show style.
Jessica Centers - Westword

Teresa Shear, director of cheerleaders and game entertainment for the Broncos, used to get calls every year from people asking if they could come watch cheerleader tryouts. The answer was always no, because she didn’t have the right space or setup to accommodate an audience. But this year, she thought, “Why not?” — and so for the first time, Shear says, the public will get to see “what the women go through” at the Cheerleader Tryout Finals.

It sounds terrifying. Sixty-two finalists, narrowed down from 202, will introduce themselves, Miss America style, before performing a series of group dances and a solo routine. By the end of the night, they (and the audience) will find out if they made the final team of 26, which will perform for the finale.

Shear says the room will be tense but fun. “We did make it into more of a show,” she says. “The audience will be constantly entertained.” And the dancing should be phenomenal. The competition gets under way in the University of Denver’s Davis Auditorium at 6 p.m.; Shear expects to have her new squad picked out by around 9:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 at here.

MHSM Girl in Your Corner April 2009 - Nikki Friedin

Nikki Friedin
Age: 24
Profession: Nuggets Dancer, Choreographer, Promotions Coordinator
Sign: Libra

FOUR THINGS WE LEARNED FROM NIKKI

1. “My childhood idol would have to be David Pace. He is the inventor of Pace Picante Sauce, my favorite food since I stopped eating out of a bottle.”

2. The perfect date is simple, consisting of only 11 things – good planning, consideration to what the woman likes, surprises, lots of talking and laughing, good wine, good food, romance, fun and, of course, dessert. That’s pretty much it, though.

3. Make your workouts beneficial to not only your body, but also to your mind. If you make your workouts fun and enjoyable, you’ll get better results.

4. A trip to Game 7 of the 2009 NBA Finals – Nuggets vs. Celtics – would be the best gift Stan Kroenke could ever give to Nikki Friedin.

“What? You’ve never seen a DJ in a bathing suit before? That happens all the time in the Mile High City.”

NLL Girl of the Week - Angela

Fourth year Wild Bunch member is psyched for BLACKOUT Night on Friday.

It seems appropriate that Angela Black of the Colorado Mammoth Wild Bunch was selected as the NLL Girl of the Week just in time for BLACKOUT Night at Pepsi Center this Friday.

As the BLACKOUT battle between Colorado and Rochester looms, Angela and the rest of the Wild Bunch are looking forward to welcoming the Mammoth back to a packed house this Friday night.

As a fourth year veteran member of the Colorado Mammoth Wild Bunch, Angela is no stranger to the 16,000 crowds at the Pepsi Center on Colorado Mammoth game nights.

"The best part about performing with the Wild Bunch and for the Colorado Mammoth has to be the fans," said Angela. "They are the best in the NLL and it is an amazing experience to have their support every single time we step onto the field. They are loud and crazy, and we love it!"

Angela has been dancing most of her life and hopes that she will be able to continue with the Wild Bunch as long as possible.

"Dancing for the Wild Bunch has been an amazing opportunity - whether we are getting ready for a game, hanging out on off weekends, or helping with charity events, we all have a great time together," said Angela.

Although Angela considers dancing to be one of her true passions, don't let the glitter and sequined costumes fool you. This Brighton, Colorado native is a serious student. She is a senior at the University of Colorado at Boulder, where she is pursing a degree in Business Accounting.

When Angela isn't practicing choreography or attending classes, she spends her remaining free time with friends and family and tries to squeeze in as much charity work as possible. She most recently completed the "Run the Republic" event in Denver where her and her teammates climbed 53 flights of stairs in the annual Rocky Mountain fundraiser for lung health.

"I think it is wonderful to be able to give back to the community and feel very blessed that I have this amazing outlet to do so," stated Angela. "The Mammoth organization does a great job of recognizing the needs of our community and we are just happy to lend a hand."

You can look for Angela and her teammates this Friday night at Pepsi Center as the Mammoth take on the Knighthawks in what is sure to be a hard-hitting, exciting game.
