Poms pick up tips from Broncos pro

By JESSE CHANEY, Fort Morgan Times Staff Writer
Thursday, August 21, 2008

Although she coaches dancers from the University of Colorado at Boulder and regularly cheers for a crowd of more than 76,000 Denver Broncos fans, a humble Liz Harris was thrilled that local Coach Lisa Padgett trusted her to help instruct the Mustang Poms dance group from Fort Morgan High School.

“That makes me feel good because Lisa was always the one that I looked up to and was inspired by,” Harris said.

Along with Fort Morgan High School alum, Harris’ credentials include Denver Broncos cheerleader and coach for the CU Cheer Squad and the CU Express Dance Team. A longtime friend of Padgett, Harris returned to her alma mater on Monday to teach the Mustang Poms a routine she created for their Dec. 6 state dance competition.

The Colorado star is a former member of the local dance group, which was called the Fort Morgan High School drill team at that time.

Harris introduced the routine to the dance team for the first time during an all-day practice Monday. She said Padgett will make any modifications needed and help the team perfect the routine.

Liz Harris, a Denver Broncos cheerleader and Fort Morgan High School alum, rehearses a dance routine Monday with members of the FMHS Mustang Poms.

“If Lisa needs help or if they need some encouragement along the way, then I’m always available for that later on down the road,” she said.

If the Fort Morgan team performs well at the state event, Padgett said, she will consider allowing the group to compete in the National Dance Association (NDA) national dance competition. The Mustang Poms qualified for the national event with their success at the NDA dance camp in July at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley.

Before graduating from Fort Morgan High in 2000, a young Harris danced alongside Padgett from 1990 to 1996 in the former Clarice Tatton School of Dance and Gymnastics.

Harris later followed in the footsteps of Padgett, who graduated from FMHS in 1995 and joined the CU Express Dance Team.

“I went and did the dance team at CU and now I coach it,” Harris said.

After completing two years at CU-Boulder, Harris enrolled in a Denver cosmetology school and later brought her business back to her hometown of Fort Morgan. The 26-year-old Harris bought her first house in Arvada in June, but she returns to Fort Morgan once each week to cut hair at Premier Salon.

“I like the community, I love all of my clients that I have and I enjoy coming back one day a week,” she said.

The daughter of Robert and Teri Harris, Liz said Fort Morgan is one of the stable things in her busy city life.

“I can go out to lunch and it only takes me three minutes to get there,” she said with a smile. “It’s nice to come back one day a week, and it keeps me grounded.”

Denver Nuggets Dancers/Colorado Crush Girls Update

The 2008-2009 Nuggets Dancers will be revealed on the website in the near future. To protect the privacy of our dancers we will no longer be posting the last names of our dancers. Therefore, Denver will have to be patient as we make preparations to show off our new dance team online.

With the success we found in the 2008 season, the Colorado Crush organization has once again decided to utilize the Denver Nuggets Dancers as the Crush Girls Dance Team. The organization announced their decision shortly before the final auditions for the Nuggets Dancers took place. Although the 2008-2009 Nuggets Dancers are excited for the amazing opportunity to be a member of 2 elite dance teams, I know this news will be disappointing to many dancers who planned to audition for the Crush Girls Dance Team this fall.

I would like to encourage everyone who planned to audition for the Crush Girls this fall to try-out for the Mammoth “Wild Bunch” dance team. The Wild Bunch will be holding open-call auditions on Sunday, September 28th. More information is available on coloradomammoth.com.

I would also like to say thank you to all the ladies who auditioned for the Nuggets Dancers this year. Everyone did a great job and I was highly impressed with the talent level I see here in Denver. The Nuggets and Crush organizations are eager to see our new dance team of 17 rookies and 1 veteran take shape under new leadership. It should be a very exciting year for all Nuggets and Crush fans!

Thank you for your support!

Cheerleaders: The Best Kind of Twelfth Man

'09 is going to be a good year...Metromix

Who says money doesn’t get you anything anymore? Last night at Invesco Field $25 got you rare access to 33 gorgeous women and complimentary Anheuser-Busch adult beverages. The curves extended beyond the bottle as the Denver Broncos Cheerleaders staged a pre-season occupation of the Club Level, personalizing copies of their 2009 swimsuit calendar. A Bronk-ette for every month of the year and then some graciously signed enough calendars to last till the next millennium with proceeds going to benefit Denver Broncos Cheerleaders charities. While every NFL team has their highs and lows, at least most fans can appreciate that one reliable constant: beautiful and vivacious ladies with pom-poms and edifying smiles.

Where are They Now - Leslie Chant

Leslie Chant is the 4 year Albuquerque Thunderbirds NBA D-League Storm Chaser’s Dance Choreographer. Leslie is excited to be working with the Storm Chasers because it is a way to be a part of the NBA without leaving her hometown of Albuquerque. Leslie, a former Denver Nugget dancer, has performed in a Latin video, as well as performing for David Hasselhoff, and Mr.T. She has over 25 years of dance experience at different levels. Leslie enjoys leading the dance team, because she enjoys seeing her ladies form smiles when they perform in front of people.

You might recognize Kandice Trujillo, 2007 - 2008 Nuggets Dancer. She was a Storm Chaser for the 2005 - 2007 seasons.
