Inside the Life of a DBC

Howdy Broncos Country!

Our first regular season home game is just DAYS away and I could not be more excited! All summer (since May!) the Cheerleaders have been preparing for the season by practicing and attending charity and promotional events.

We are often confronted with similar questions by the fans, so I thought I’d try to shed light on some of the most frequent questions we hear in case you haven’t had a chance to ask us yourself! I also hope this helps you to better understand the life of a Denver Broncos Cheerleader and what it’s like to dance for the best team in the NFL!

Do you have a weight requirement? I get this question a lot, and it always surprises me. No, we do not have weigh-ins, and there is no weight requirement. We are accountable for keeping fit so we look and feel our best in our uniforms, and represent the Broncos and the rest of our teammates well. Also, DBC’s have always been known for our abs and we want to maintain that reputation!

Do you guys eat? YES, we eat a lot!! I can’t go 2 hours without eating! It takes a lot of energy to get through practices and game days, so rabbit food diets won’t cut it either. Eating a balanced, healthy diet helps us looking and feeling our best, but cutting out all junk food is not realistic. My personal favorite is Mexican food, and one of our line captains (Nicole) even bakes treats for the team to celebrate birthdays!

Do you travel with the football team? No, we do not travel with the team. In fact, the NFL mandates against our being on the field of an opposing team during away games, with the exception of the Super Bowl, which is played on a neutral field. Life as a DBC is already so busy, I can’t imagine having a family, working or going to school full time AND traveling to away games. Our team does travel occasionally, several of the veterans performed on a AFE (Armed Forces Entertainment) tour in Australia last March!

How often do you practice? We have 2 formal rehearsals per week, each lasting anywhere between 4-5 hours in length. Most of us spend 1-2 nights per week “practicing for practice,” especially during the early summer months as we prepare the bulk of our routines for the season. By the first preseason game, we have 25-30 routines, and once the season kicks off we continue to learn new material. It is our responsibility to come prepared to rehearsal, so for many of us, extra practice time is often required.

Do you get paid? I get this question a lot, too. Yes, we are paid. I won’t tell you how much, but I will say it is enough. It is not about the money; field level seats for every home game are worth it in itself! We all feel so blessed to be able to do what we love (dance and perform), for the team that we love (the Broncos!!), and feel it is a bonus to be compensated for it.

Are the girls nice? Does everyone get along? Surprisingly enough, yes! On the field, we are professional and always act with the best interest of the team in mind. Off the field, I have made some of my best friends in life. It’s impossible to be best friends with 25 other women, but I trust that every one of my teammates would have my back in a heartbeat if it came down to it.

Do you have to tryout every year? Yes, all 26 women must compete for their spot at auditions each year, and trust me, no one is safe.

Hope to see you at the game this Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks!

Go Broncos!

My best always,

- Katie

Denver Metromix

The Pepsi Center was red hot on this fine Saturday afternoon, with some of the hottest dancers in Denver. The big stage was set for the 2010-2011 Denver Nuggets Dancers final auditions. As Metromix entered the gym, tensions were high and dancers were on top of their game, in hopes to make the final cut. The music blasted while each dancer tried to execute each move to impress the intimidating panel of judges.

The remaining 24 dancers were at their last audition to make the final 18 for the season. The last steps were made and the panel of judges deliberated. One of the final 18 girls was Nicole Hurdle who had some really fancy footwork on the dance floor.

Come down to the Pepsi Center this season to check out the hottest dancers in the NBA!

Success on the Race Track

Hello Broncos Fans!

Here comes the best time of the year, Football Season! Not only has this past weekend been exciting for football fans and players all over the nation, it has been a very important weekend for the Denver Broncos Cheerleaders. Over the weekend we hosted our second annual Race to Keep Kids on Track. In combination with the release of our 2011 Calendar, every penny we raised will go to The Boys and Girls Clubs of Metro Denver and The Kempe Foundation for the Prevention and Treatment of Child Abuse and Neglect.

For the past two years we have been lucky enough to be able to have our races at The Track at Centennial. This is Colorado’s premier racetrack. It is go-kart heaven. Before our event last year, I had never driven a go-kart (unless bumper cars count). And the gracious owner of the track, Jim Keesling, and his wonderful staff showed us how to race. They gave us a chance to get in the karts and practice before the actual event. Some of the cheerleaders learned to drive really well before our final race. These karts go up to 60 miles per hour, and boy is it scary. I would say that some of our girls could even go pro one day!

Our event was held over two nights. At both events we had great vendors who were generous enough to supply fabulous food and beverages. We had great food from Del Frisco’s, Sullivan’s, Wahoo’s fish taco, Happy Cakes, and Mark Schlereth’s Stinkin Good Green Chili. Our beverages were supplied by Red Bull, Budweiser, Coca Cola, and Smartwater. We had enough great food to keep us all energized and racing for two nights!

We had our kickoff night on Friday. It was great to meet all our VIP guests and sponsors. We also held our qualifying races that night. Everyone did a great job, even though it was the first go karting experience for most of our guests.

On Saturday night even more people came to join the fun, and what a success it was. We even had a very large group of Broncos Alumni come out and support our cause. We had greats like Rod Smith, Nate Jackson, Randy Gradishar, Mark Schlereth, Charlie Adams, and David Treadwell to name a few. They were all so excited to be racing and supporting a good cause. It was such an amazing feeling to have so much support. I also ate a lot of Mark Schelreth’s Green Chili and it was amazing.

Katie, one of our fellow cheerleaders, has been the woman in charge. She has done such a wonderful job organizing this event and making it a success. Thank you Katie! We are also so grateful for what we have accomplished in two years. Last year we raised over $20,000 for at risk youth, and this year our goal was $40,000. Stay tuned to find out how much we raised and how you can come out and join the fun next year at the event’s Web site.

A special thanks to Jim Keesling and his staff at The Track at Centennial, our Broncos alumni, Red Bull, Budweiser, Wahoo’s fish taco, Happy Cakes, Sullivan’s Del Frisco’s, Go Auto, Smartwater, Tayo Photography, Sublime Concepts, our sponsors, VIPS, and everyone who came out to support such an amazing cause.

Thank you,

Allyson

Where Are They Now - Maria Mateo

Former DND Maria Mateo is entering her first season as a San Francisco 49ers Gold Rush Cheerleader. Sneak peek at her photo and bio...

Career goal:
Since middle school I wanted to become an interior designer, but recently I have developed a passion for medicine and am pursuing a career in dermatology.

What you like best about the 49ers:
What I like best about the 49ers is that they represent the highest level of sportsmanship, professionalism, and integrity. The organization is a socially responsible entity, not only in sports but in the larger community it serves.

Guilty pleasures:
My guilty pleasures include, but are not limited to, laughing out loud, vanilla bean ice cream, fashion, big and fluffy dogs, Travel Channel and HGTV, festivals, anything French, and Survivor (have been a fan since Colby Donaldson!).

Hobbies (outside of dance):
Outside of dance I love to run, shop, travel, sing while driving, play with my niece and nephew, play the piano, and, most importantly, spend quality time with people I love.

Most adventurous thing you have done:
The most adventurous thing I have done, besides skydiving for my birthday, is paying for higher education on my own. It’s a big risk I chose to take. I get a rush knowing I can do things I set my mind to, on my pace, and am picking up life skills while gaining meaningful relationships along the way.

Most proud of:
I am most proud of my faith and integrity. My faith assists in giving me the confidence to trust myself and feel secure in my skin.It teaches me to be aware of my actions and be open-minded; hence, I do my best to not put myself in situations that will compromise my integrity but still try new things.

Most memorable moment as a Gold Rush member:
Aside from bonding with my teammates, my most memorable moment as a Gold Rush Member thus far was my first Appearance in my Gold Rush uniform supporting the Yes on J rally where I heard Jerry Rice and Dwight Clark speak alongside Jed York, surrounded by Santa Clara 49er Faithful!

Best word that describes you:
Well-rounded.

What most people don’t know about you:
I am fascinated with Latin (ballroom) dancing, especially the Rumba.

I wish I could:
I wish I could have a Girls’ Night Out with Victoria Beckham, Audrey Hepburn, Angelina Jolie, Princess Diana, Giselle Bündchen, Basia Trzetrzelewska, Drs. Rodan and Fields, and Lady Gaga. In their unique way, they are beautiful, intriguing, and powerful women. Each of them has that je ne sais quoi - it’s charming. And I cannot help but be inspired by them.

Song do you most enjoy dancing to:
I like dancing to songs with catchy melodies.

Something you like to do each day:
Each day I am thankful for another day, I like chatting with my sisters, surf the web, and eat something sweet.

Where Are They Now - Erica Weston

Congratulations to former DBC Erica Weston for her 3rd year selection to the Los Angeles Laker Girls!

Denver Broncos Cheerleader Calendar 2011: See a sneak preview of the photos here

Denver Westword Blogs
By Nick Lucchesi

Cheerleaders! Something about them makes most red-blooded American males begin frothing at the mouth. It's ingrained into American culture from the time we're tykes: boys -- like the cheerleaders; girls -- be like the cheerleaders. So it's with mild fervor each fall that the annual cheerleader calendar for the upcoming year is issued. From high school lockers to the walls of mechanic shops to the lap drawers of law offices, this calendar is ogled -- at least twelve times a year, anyway.

Here's a sneak peak at the 2011 calendar, which was released over the weekend at The Track, a go-cart race venue in Centennial. (Proceeds from this event benefit Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Denver as well as the Kempe Foundation for the Prevention and Treatment of Child Abuse and Neglect.)
