The Bye-Week Buzz

Greetings “Bye-Week” fans! I hope you all were able to fill your week with Broncos excitement even though we did not have a game this past Sunday. Though the week is not complete without a Sunday game, I am a big fan of the bye week because it allows our team to rest and assess what changes need to be made for the rest of the season. And the great news is that the Broncos tend to do very well after a week off the gridiron! Now, I must warn you that I am what some may consider a “crazy fan” — but I prefer to think of myself as a diehard fan! I have loved football since I was six years old, and every season I seem to get more and more involved. I think that knowing the history of the Broncos is not only exciting, but always comes in handy when opposing fans are trying to challenge your knowledge! So to start off this week’s blog, let’s go over a little Broncos trivia that may come in handy this Sunday!

Did you know???

-the Broncos record after a bye week is 15-4 since 1990, which ties for the best record in the NFL with Minnesota and Philadelphia

-We are 10-3 after a bye week under Coach Shanahan and have won the post-bye game for the past 5 seasons.

-AND, the Broncos own a better winning percentage (63-34) in the games played after their bye week than games played before (64-38) since the bye was introduced in 1990. I’d say we are in pretty good shape right now!

In spirit of this past week being a week off of football, I thought I’d touch on a huge aspect of what the cheerleaders do off the field, by sharing with you what I did last Saturday. Community involvement is incredibly important to our team, and we take great pride and joy in our involvement throughout the Denver community. As a team, we dedicated more than 1,500 hours of community involvement throughout 85 Colorado organizations last year, and we hope to log in even more hours this year! A new organization that we have become involved with this year is Habitat for Humanity.

Habitat for Humanity was founded in 1976, and since then has built nearly 300,000 homes for more than 1.5 million who are in need of shelter. Every weekend starting in August, two or three cheerleaders have been helping to build a home for a family in Aurora. Saturday was my first time at the site, and I was simply in awe. The jobs for this weekend were insulating the crawl space, caulking, painting, and nailing in parts of the roof. Kim Hidalgo was with me this weekend, and we were ready to get to work as soon as we arrived! We eagerly strapped on our tool belts, hard hats, and protective glasses and got down to business. Our day started at 9 a.m. and ended around 4:30 p.m., and boy did the time fly! We were having such a wonderful time with the other volunteers and working on our projects that we couldn’t believe it when the day was over. We had a great time all day, and the best part was feeling that we made a difference in someone’s life.

We were fortunate enough to meet Stephanie, the woman who will be living in the new home as well as one of her three daughters, Raven. Stephanie worked on the house all day with us, and has been doing so since the beginning. We learned that the individuals who receive homes from Habitat for Humanity must log in at least 100 hours of work into building their own home and 150 hours of building other homes. I think that this is one of the reasons why Habitat is such a special program. By actively building their own homes, these homeowners will be able to take such immense pride in their house and will treasure it so much more than if it was built without their help. They are also able to make lasting friendships with other people in their community who are in their same situation. Habitat definitely brings communities together in a very special and unique way.

After being a cheerleader for four incredible seasons, I have felt the impact of community involvement and can’t imagine my life without it. The special thing about giving to others is that not only do you make an impact in their lives, but they have such a profound impact on you. I have learned so much about myself through the amazing members of the Denver community and am so grateful for every moment spent with them. Getting involved in charities and civic work is an incredibly uplifting experience that benefits so many people, including you! So the next time you are hanging out when the Broncos aren’t playing, find a nearby place to volunteer, and I guarantee you will feel inspired, grateful, and absolutely awesome afterwards!

Thanks for reading my blog, and hope to hear from you all! And LET’S GO BRONCOS!!!

Your Resident Rookie

Football season is finally upon us and it’s already been a wild ride! My name is Christina Connolly and this is my rookie year as a Denver Broncos Cheerleader. I’ve always been quite the tomboy/sports-addict and I love watching football. As a Colorado native, the Broncos have been a big part of my upbringing, and I am a die hard blue and orange fan! Now I have the incredible opportunity and distinct pleasure of being down on the field watching the action first hand! What more could a football fan ask for?

I wish I could put into words how it feels to be down on the sidelines. We’ve had a few home games now and what an experience it has been! Being in the midst of all the action can definitely be a bit overwhelming but exciting nonetheless. You really get a feel for how hard those guys hit when you’re down on the field with them. One thing’s for sure, I am staying out of their way! We had a close call at the Broncos vs. New Orleans game. Before one of our quarter break performances, all of the cheerleaders were waiting behind the north end zone for the quarter to end. Brandon Marshall caught a pass and sprinted for, and straight through, the end zone. Fortunately we were all paying attention and quickly jumped out of his way as he ran straight for us. I’m just glad the wall is what stopped him instead of one of our cheerleaders!!

It’s interesting because I’ve had some fans express how surprised they were that we spend a lot of time standing on the sidelines and just watching the plays. For those who may have wondered the same thing, there are a few reasons for this. The most important reason is that we need to see what’s going on so that if a play is forced out of bounds and in our direction, we don’t get hit (i.e. Brandon Marshall running through the end zone)! Second, we don’t want to block our fans’ view of the play by shaking our pom-poms in the air and lastly, we LOVE football!! We want to see all the action just as much as our fans do! All of the women on the team understand and have a passion for football. Part of the audition process is actually being required to know an entire packet of Broncos information including the entire team roster and the Denver Broncos history. Yikes!!

Needless to say, it’s been an incredible year so far and absolutely nothing like I imagined it would be! Just as the players have been rigorously practicing, so have your Broncos Cheerleaders. We rehearse an average of 10 hours every week, and you better believe that our coaches, much like the players coaches, expect nothing short of a near perfect performance. We work ourselves into the ground to make our many routines look effortless, and we love nothing more than giving a great performance and connecting with our fans! October has been, and will continue to be, a very busy month as we are in the process of learning about 2 new dances each rehearsal! Talk about a brain overload!! On top of that, all of the women on the team are either in school full-time or have full-time jobs. I work in a law firm and it sometimes gets difficult finding time for everything. I’ve learned so much from the veterans as they have made an art out of managing their busy lives!

Well this season has been quite the rollercoaster ride thus far, but one thing has always remained the same and that is the loyalty of our dear Broncos fans! Come rain or shine, snow or sleet, we can always count on you to be there cheering on our team! We will win some and lose some, but nevertheless, you are always there for the next go-round with your heads held high. We can feel your incredible energy and enthusiasm from down on the field. I know that our team can bounce back from Sunday’s loss and I can’t wait to see you all back at Invesco Field on November 2nd. In the meantime, the in between time, lets pray for a win next Monday against the Patriots! Go Broncos!!!

A Cheerleader's Game Day

Hello Broncos Fans!! My name is Romi Bean, and this is my fourth season as a Denver Broncos Cheerleader. I have to say that I enjoy it more and more each year! This year, there will be three cheerleaders rotating on this blog, so we can give you variety and different perspectives. Thanks to the extensive media coverage, it is easy for our fans to be involved and aware of the news, highlights, and rigorous practices of our Denver Broncos football team. Through the daily news, Jay Cutler Live, post game recaps and broadcasts and of course, the exciting Sunday match-ups, we can all keep our “Broncos I.Q.” very high.

In the spirit of boosting our “Broncos I.Q.” even higher, I thought I would talk about some of the aspects of being a cheerleader for the Denver Broncos. Connecting with our fans is of utmost importance to us, and hopefully you will all get to know us a little better by the end of this blog!

Just like the players, we have a very intense game day schedule that keeps us on our toes and demands our full energy all day long. Before we set foot on the field at 2:05, we have a field rehearsal four hours prior to game time. As a cheerleader, timeliness is essential – and we all tend to follow the old saying “if you are early, you are on time, and if you are on time, you are late!” This means we all arrive at the stadium about five hours before the game so we can stretch, unpack our bags, and practice on our own before field rehearsal. During field rehearsal, we run through all of the dance routines that we will be performing that day. Our Director and Director of Game Day Entertainment, Teresa Shear, and choreographer, Shelly Trujillo, expect our routines to be flawless at this point – this means no memory mistakes, strong technique, and performances that are energetic and powerful. We have approximately one hour to perform all of our routines and need to be off the field by 11.00; at this point many players from the opposing team head onto the field to practice their “routines” for the upcoming game.

Following field rehearsal we head into our locker room to eat lunch and get ready for promotional events that are held throughout the stadium before the game begins. Around 12:30, Shelly rounds up the ladies and off we go to our promotions! If you go to the games, this is a great time to come and meet some of us and get some autographs as well! You can find us in the team store, the Budweiser Champions Club, the East and West Clubs, the Broncos Barn, and various other spots. Of all the pre-game promotions, the Broncos Barn is my personal favorite, because we get to meet so many excited and energized fans. Everyone has face paintings, awesome jerseys, and that Mile High Spirit which makes you the best fans in the NFL!! At the Barn, we sign autographs and then perform two dances for the tailgaters – it’s “sneak peek” of some of the dances we will be performing during the game. If you get a chance, definitely come to the Broncos Barn before the season ends – you will love it!

After our pre-game promotions, we rush back to the locker room to make sure we are 100% ready for the game, and before we know it, we are on the field welcoming our 2008 Denver Broncos! The three or four hours of game time are exhilarating, exciting and absolutely breathtaking – to explain all the details definitely requires another blog entry, so stay tuned for more and more as the season progresses!! I can’t wait to get to know our Broncos fans better through this bog, and I look forward to your comments! Have a great week, and GO BRONCOS!!

One more thing – we are 4-1!!
